Kai Jun Chen presented his latest work on the modeling of lattices with programmable stiffness enabled using gecko-inspired variable stiffness hinges. The work presents homogenization techniques for capturing the elastic response of large lattices and experimental validation. A bending-dominated lattice made of only 12 elements with two available stiffness states each, gives arbitrary control over compressive stiffness.
